Leeds United News: Chris Wilder refutes “done and dusted” claim
Leeds United have a five-point advantage to see through in the final four games of the season, following three successive defeats for Sheffield United in April.
Chris Wilder has done remarkably well to have his Sheffield United side competing at the top of the division after immense upheaval at the club, a protracted takeover, and a two-point deduction.
The main headline at the moment now, though, is how he and his side have totally imploded in April, relinquishing top spot and moving five points back from both Leeds and Burnley due to three successive defeats.
Chris Wilder shares verdict on if Leeds United’s promotion is “done and dusted”
Leeds need seven points maximum to guarantee promotion, which drops with any points that the Blades drop in their final four game, with Burnley away looming on Easter Monday.
However, despite the fact that the Bramall Lane club face a tall order to overcome the five-point deficit, Wilder is rightly not going down without a fight.
After their recent loss at Plymouth, Wilder was pictured giving a post-match briefing to his players on the pitch, which has been likened to Phil Brown’s infamous half-time Hull City team talk away at Manchester City.
“I thought it was important,” said Wilder, via the Yorkshire Post. “It wasn’t a Phil Brown moment.
“It was a calm chat to say we have to take responsibility for three games where we’ve turned a really good position into a not so good one. We have to own and accept that we haven’t been good enough.
“There’ll be a lot of people talking about our season being done and dusted, it’s not. We’ve given up an advantage, that’s all we’ve done.”
There is always going to be an element of second-guessing when you’ve just lost three games on the spin, with fans critiquing lineups named under Wilder, unchanged against Millwall to then make five changes at Plymouth – both resulting in defeats.
Wilder, though, is trusting his swing this weekend as they host Cardiff City on Good Friday.
“Confidence is a massive thing, and pressure is a privilege,” he said via The Star. “That’s an excuse, pressure. It’s nonsense. We should be embracing that. We’ve just not done the basics right in both boxes.
“I’m not going to take a wrecking ball to the overall shape of the team because that’s got us to over 80 points. More than two points per game. So it’d be quite difficult for us to massively change our philosophy and all the work we’ve put in, in pre-season and right the way through.
“Tactically there might be a few tweaks. Selection is obviously key but I’m not going to take a wrecking ball to it. I still believe massively in this group of players that have got us more than two points per game.”
Playing last on Friday isn’t an ideal development for us, with Sheffield United and Burnley able to put a lot of pressure on us going into our game at the Kassam Stadium.
We’ve got this far, though, and the focus has to be there from Farke’s squad to get the job done against Oxford regardless of what happens elsewhere.
Ethan Ampadu above everyone needs to step up as captain of this side to ensure that the final four games go better than last season’s.
