After going on loan to Preston and Middlesbrough, the Leeds United player has been seen practicing in Sunderland.

With his Elland Road future still up in the air, Leeds United forward Sam Greenwood has been spotted back in the North East, practicing with coaches in Sunderland.

The 23-year-old was photographed with coaches Carl Lawson and Rees Greenwood, who both rose through the Sunderland levels, at a CL Football Academy session. Sam Greenwood is reportedly using the training session, which took place in the Sunderland area, as part of his off-season preparation to stay sharp before what might be a pivotal summer for his career.

Greenwood, one of several Leeds players who apparently face an unclear future after the club’s return to the Premier League, spent the 2024–25 season on loan to Preston North End. As Leeds restructures their team to satisfy top-flight expectations, Sam Greenwood has been mentioned in rumours as a potential exit along with Joe Gelhardt and Darko Gyabi.

Under Paul Heckingbottom, the forward from Sunderland had a great start to his loan stint at Deepdale, displaying bursts of technical skill, perseverance, and work ethic that made him an invaluable outlet early in the season. But in the second part of the season, his impact diminished. Preston North End is now allegedly unlikely to execute a permanent deal, despite Sam Greenwood’s early effect, as the buy clause is estimated to be over £1.5 million. It is comparable to previous summer, when Middlesbrough decided not to make the move permanent due to a decline in performance.

Sam Greenwood’s future is still uncertain because Preston is concentrating on rebuilding with less resources and Leeds is having to make significant decisions regarding their entire squad after winning promotion to the Premier League. Although a return to Sunderland is not anticipated following the Wearsiders’ promotion to the top division, the forward is anticipated to draw attention from Championship and international clubs.

Sam Greenwood joined Leeds in 2020 after starting his youth career at Sunderland and then transferring to Arsenal. It is not thought that any transfer negotiations are related to his return to the area for off-season training. Professionals now frequently travel to CL Football Coaching during the off-season to train with players at different skill levels. Sam Greenwood is still under contract with Leeds United as of right now.

Greenwood has made 103 appearances in all competitions since making his senior debut, tallying 14 goals. After making his debut at Leeds United in the 2021–22 Premier League season, he went on to play 26 games for the team overall, 18 of which were in the top division in the 2022–23 season, during which he scored his first goal as a senior.

After that, he made 38 appearances and scored five goals while on loan at Middlesbrough for the 2023–24 campaign. After that, in 2024–25, Greenwood had another loan stint at Preston North End, where he scored five goals in 25 games.
