Leeds United are reportedly considering a deadline-day bid to bring Kalvin Phillips back to Elland Road, with former Everton CEO Keith Wyness suggesting the midfielder could be a “very impressive” last-minute signing.

Phillips’ Potential Return to Leeds

The 29-year-old, who left Leeds for Manchester City in a £40 million deal three years ago, has struggled to establish himself at the Etihad. After loan spells at West Ham and Ipswich Town, Phillips remains out of favor under Pep Guardiola and is expected to depart before the transfer window closes.

Wyness, now a football consultant, believes Leeds may wait until the final days of the window to make their move, banking on a reduced fee for the injury-recovering midfielder.

“Leeds will likely only bid once his price drops,” Wyness stated on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast“He hasn’t rediscovered his best form since leaving, but a return to Leeds could reignite his career.”

A Calculated Gamble for Leeds

Phillips, who underwent Achilles surgery earlier this summer, is no longer the same player who earned England recognition during his first stint at Leeds. Wyness acknowledged the risks but suggested the emotional pull of a homecoming could prove decisive.

“The fans remember his past brilliance—if he shows flashes of that early on, they’ll back him,” he said. “This feels like a deal that goes down to the wire, driven by price and risk assessment.”

Leeds Also Eye Liverpool’s Tsimikas

In parallel transfer activity, Leeds are monitoring Liverpool left-back Kostas Tsimikas, who is reportedly available for £15 million. The Greek defender, excluded from Arne Slot’s Community Shield squad, is said to be surplus to requirements at Anfield. Former Manchester United scout Mick Brown claims Leeds will compete with Nottingham Forest for his signature.
