List of Lincolnshire schools offering free breakfast clubs from today
A handful of schools in Lincolnshire are among the first in the country providing free breakfast clubs every day to all pupils. From Tuesday, April 22, a total of 750 schools across the country will be taking part in the scheme, ahead of the Labour government rolling it out to every primary school in England.
These new clubs, including at eight schools in Lincolnshire, will provide 30 minutes of morning childcare as part of a trial following the promises made in last year’s Labour manifesto. The government estimates that the scheme will save parents £450 each year.
Children can be dropped off half an hour earlier, and schools are also being encouraged to offer healthy and nutritious breakfasts, such as porridge and fresh fruit. The schools currently taking part in the trial include around 180,000 pupils, and they will inform the later national rollout.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson previously said: “Breakfast clubs can have a transformative impact on the lives of children, feeding hungry tummies and fuelling hungry minds, so every child begins the day ready to learn. Alongside our plans to roll out school-based nurseries and get thousands more children school-ready, this government is delivering the reforms needed to give every child, wherever they grow up, the best start in life.”
The early adopter schools were chosen to make sure that a variety of locations are used to inform the nationwide rollout, and this includes schools across Lincolnshire, such as Boston, Skegness, Grantham and Gainsborough.
Sir David Holmes, chief executive of the Family Action charity, previously stated : “These schools will have a vital test and learn role which will undoubtedly inform the national rollout of the government’s exciting universal breakfast policy. We know that an effective breakfast provision delivered in a supportive and enriching environment can make the world of difference to a child.”
