Liverpool transfer news update as Premier League champions linked to Adam Wharton ahead of title defence
With midfielders Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, and Dominik Szoboszlai all contributing directly to goals, the Merseysiders defeated Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 at Anfield on Sunday, securing their title as Premier League champions.
Even though the squad has performed well this season, manager Arne Slot is expected to want to recruit a number of players in the summer, possibly even in the middle of the field.
“Definitely a player that’s liked by Liverpool because I know for a fact that they liked him when he was at Blackburn before he made that move to Crystal Palace,” Lynch said in response to Sports Mole’s question about whether Palace’s Wharton would be on Liverpool’s radar. He was definitely being watched.
Sometimes, after a player has been in the Championship, Liverpool hasn’t made the leap, but another Premier League team has, and suddenly they perform really well and are valued at £100 million. Liverpool liked him back then, but sometimes you’d want to see them take the chance and enter first.
“He is an incredibly talented player. He is a pretty cool football player who is collected when in possession, and I do like watching him. Without a doubt, fans still like him because of the way he moves the ball.
Wharton has performed admirably for Palace in 2024–25, helping the Eagles advance to the FA Cup final. Slot’s more controlled style of play would complement his skill with the ball at his feet.
Slot may like to bolster his team’s midfield, but if he wants to guide the team to the 2025–2026 championship, he may need to bolster several other areas as well.
Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota, both strikers, have struggled this season, while veteran left-back Andrew Robertson has frequently had his spot in the squad questioned.
“I’m sceptical about the idea that they would sign him this summer. I don’t think central midfield is an area Liverpool are going to go big on. The clear areas for strengthening are center-forward – and that’s going to cost a lot – and a starting left-back,” Lynch told Sports Mole, expressing his opinion that the Reds might not sign a midfielder given the work they need to do in the summer.
Internally, those are seen as Liverpool’s top priorities. Since they will need a backup right-back for Conor Bradley and there are other areas of the game [to reinforce in], central midfield will also be far lower on the list. There is also a lot of turnover in other areas because center-half Joe Gomez appears to be leaving.
Slot has so far only trusted four midfielders to start games: Curtis Jones, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, and Gravenberch. However, he has frequently brought on veteran Wataru Endo to watch games.
“Maybe in a couple of summers time that will become a priority for Liverpool, but I don’t see it being in this summer window, and so with Wharton and his price tag, I’m struggling to see how that one comes together.”
Liverpool attempted to bolster their midfield before the season began, but their pursuit of Martin Zubimendi ultimately fell through, allowing Gravenberch to step up and claim a starting spot.
“It’s more likely to be necessitated by a Wataru Endo exit, bringing in someone in a support role who can play a little more, but that’s not Wharton. When he makes a big move he’s going to want 30 Premier League games and Liverpool aren’t looking for that player,”
Lynch said in an interview with Sports Mole, implying that the club would only look for a rotational option in midfield. Endo was linked to a move away from Anfield in both the summer and the winter, so it wouldn’t be shocking if the 32-year-old was the target of bids in the upcoming transfer window.
“They want someone who can play more and who the manager trusts a little more, but I don’t think we’re looking at someone who is coming in and saying, ‘I want to play for 30 Premier League games.'” That won’t be the case; [the current] three will start.
“I think Curtis Jones will play a lot, and I hope another player, who isn’t quite a sure starter, will play a lot as a rotation option. The left-back and center-forward are the immediate upgrades to this starting lineup, but I don’t think it can be considered a top priority right now, even if I know it’s a hot topic on social media and the internet.”
Given that Mac Allister is 26 years old, Gravenberch and Szoboszlai are only 22 and 24 years old, respectively, and there is no reason to believe that the three will not remain a mainstay of Liverpool’s midfield for many years to come.
