Luke Southwood is still scheduled to join Bristol Rovers from Bolton Wanderers.

Luke Southwood, keeper for Bolton Wanderers, is nearing a transfer to Bristol.

According to The Bolton News, Luke Southwood’s transfer to Bristol Rovers is still on track and may be finalised this week.

After speaking with the League Two team, the Northern Ireland international goalie may undergo a medical early this week, according to South West sources.

When Rovers signed former Leicester City custodian Brad Young last week, there were concerns over the transaction, but it is believed that the move is still possible.

Despite making 26 games in his only season with the Whites, Southwood was probably going to be benched in favour of Teddy Sharman-Lowe, who was loaned from Chelsea.

After playing for their nation earlier this month, he and Josh Sheehan were granted some more time off; but, considering the speed at which the transfer is going, he might not even return to Lostock.

The 27-year-old, who shares playing time with Nathan Baxter, was well-considered by Steven Schumacher, who hoped to add a new first-choice custodian this summer.

Sharman-Lowe is anticipated to join Wanderers in the days ahead of their departure to Spain for a warm weather training camp. He was a member of the England Under-21 team that won the European Championship over the weekend for the second consecutive year.

Schumacher has a decision to make in light of Southwood’s impending departure, and it’s unclear if Luke Hutchinson, who signed a new two-year contract with the team last month, will be moved up to number two.

Though the 22-year-old only has one full season of experience—one in which he helped Doncaster Rovers win League Two—there is a risk if the team does not bring in another seasoned backup. Sharman-Lowe was hand-picked by the head coach and his new head of goalkeeping, Owain Fon Williams, from a number of elite keepers who were available on loan.

Before their preseason program begins in Marbella, Wanderers are still looking to add players, and Celtic rejected their bid for striker Johnny Kenny.

The young Irishman, who scored 21 goals last season, including during a successful loan stint with Shamrock Rovers in the Europa Conference League, is reportedly valued at £1 million by the Glasgow side.

Bolton’s first bid of £500,000 has been widely publicised, but they have previously demonstrated this summer that they would not stray from their player value by rejecting an offer of almost the same amount for Kelly Nmai of Salford City.

Since then, the selling club has attempted to increase interest in order to raise the price in both situations. Bolton is aware of their spending limits and is seeking to hire for other roles. They have also made Hull City’s Matty Jacob another cash offer.

It is doubtful that the Whites will be spending another seven-figure sum this summer unless they sell one of their higher-paid players, but Celtic have also hinted that they would be willing to loan Kenny later in the transfer season if Brendan Rodgers is successful in acquiring another striker.

Dan Nlundulu, a striker with one year remaining on his current deal, is one of the periphery players whom Wanderers are trying to let go of.

having Schumacher acknowledged he wasn’t in his first team plans, the former Southampton striker will be offered out again this season having spending the previous campaign on loan at Cambridge United in League One.
