Pictures of the fire appeared on social media, prompting speculation that the fixture was in doubt. Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue were called to extinguish the fire. However, the Hatters moved to allay any fears that the match would be cancelled, stating that the fire had been extinguished.

The club said in a statement: “We would like to inform supporters that, following reports of an incident at Kenilworth Road this evening, there will be no disruption to tomorrow’s match against Coventry City.

“Smoke was discovered to be coming from a small appliance that had caught fire in the stadium’s laundry room. It was contained within that area and dealt with quickly to avoid any significant damage.

“We would like to offer a huge thank you to Beds Fire & Rescue for their quick intervention, along with club partners and staff who are also on site to help resolve the issue and ensure that everything is now safe.”

Saturday’s match is crucial for both ends of the Championship table. Despite two consecutive victories, Luton remain on the verge of relegation for the second time in a row following a nightmare return to the second tier.

The Hatters were eliminated from the Premier League after a single season. They won the playoff final against Coventry at Wembley Stadium.

With only two games remaining in the season, Luton is 22nd and in the relegation zone due to goal difference. On the final weekend, they will face West Brom at The Hawthorns.
