Major Sheffield Wednesday transfer call involving West Ham and Rangers to be made by one man

Manager Henrik Pedersen has conceded that the future of Sheffield Wednesday’s star player ultimately rests with owner Dejphon Chansiri.

Wednesday have lost significant players in recent months, with some leaving for free and others, such as Djeidi Gassama and Anthony Musaba, being sold to alleviate financial concerns, as well as promising youth Caelen-Kole Cadamarteri.

Pierce Charles, a goalkeeping wonderkid, is the latest name to spark speculation about a potential sale, with The Star reporting interest from West Ham United and Rangers.

At the age of 20, the talented Northern Ireland number one is the closest thing the Owls have to a senior goalkeeper, having made only 15 club appearances. Despite the fact that his career is still in its early stages, his potential is well-known to prospective clubs, with a slew of scouts deployed to watch him last season.

The nature of these clubs’ sustained interest comes as S6 faces continued financial challenges. It is expected that the club will be able to pay the wages owed to its employees and other clubs in the coming days – payments are expected to be made today (Friday), though the majority of the funds put forward for the repayment of these debts are thought to have come from Premier League solidarity payments.

It implies that the cashflow troubles that have plagued the club’s fortunes this summer are certain to continue, but to what extent is unknown. It raises the possibility of cashing in on Charles, and in an interview with The Star, new manager Henrik Pedersen stated that the Owls chairman will ultimately make the decision.

When asked how much control he had over the youngster’s future – or how difficult the issue is – the Dane smiled: “It’s more complicated than something I can control.

“Ultimately, the chairman is the club’s owner, and he will make the final decision. I can express my wishes to him, and of course, I hope Pierce stays – he’s a terrific goalkeeper and a fantastic human being, and he’s an important part of how Sheffield Wednesday wants to play football in the future. Of course, I’ll do everything I can to keep him at the club.”

Charles is thought to be eager to continue his career on Wednesday. The former Manchester City academy keeper impressed in the last stages of the Owls’ previous season, and at S6, he is anticipated to play his first complete season between the senior posts.
