Man, 19, Found Shot to Death Near Monte Park: City Records Third Homicide of the Year
A 19-year-old man was found shot to death near Monte Park late Tuesday evening, marking the city’s third homicide of the year. The victim, who has not yet been identified, was discovered by a passerby at around 9:15 p.m. lying motionless in a grassy area adjacent to the popular public park. Authorities confirmed that he sustained a single gunshot wound to the head.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene after a 911 call reported a possible shooting. Upon arrival, first responders attempted to revive the victim but he was pronounced dead on the scene. A preliminary investigation by the city’s Homicide Unit indicates the shooting may have occurred just moments before the call was made.
Police spokesperson Sgt. Natalie Jacobs stated during a Wednesday morning press briefing that the motive remains unclear. “We’re appealing to members of the public who may have seen or heard anything unusual in the area around the time of the incident to come forward,” she said. “This young man lost his life in a senseless act of violence, and we are committed to bringing those responsible to justice.”
Monte Park, usually a peaceful and well-frequented space by families and joggers, was cordoned off throughout the night as detectives combed the area for clues. Yellow evidence markers dotted the ground Wednesday morning as forensic teams collected shell casings and reviewed footage from nearby surveillance cameras.
Though the victim has not yet been named, police confirmed that he was a local resident and lived within a few miles of the park. Authorities are working to notify his family.
This tragic killing has reignited concern over rising youth violence in the city. Several community leaders voiced alarm at the frequency of violent incidents involving young people. “We cannot allow another life to be lost without action,” said Councilwoman Teresa Ngoma. “There must be investment in prevention—safe spaces, youth mentorship, and intervention strategies before tragedies like this become the norm.”
Residents living near Monte Park expressed shock and sadness. “This is a quiet neighborhood,” said Marlon Reed, who lives two blocks away. “I walk through that park every evening. The thought that something like this could happen so close to home is terrifying.”
While investigators have not ruled out the possibility of gang involvement, Sgt. Jacobs emphasized that it is too early to make any definitive connections. No suspects have been named, and no arrests have been made as of Wednesday afternoon.
The department has urged anyone with information to contact their anonymous tip line or submit leads through the city’s crime reporting app.
As the city grapples with its third homicide of the year, Mayor Linda Curtis issued a statement calling for calm and cooperation: “We mourn with the family of this young man. An autopsy is expected to be conducted later this week. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
