Man Arrested on Suspicion of Drug Driving After Serious Crash Leaves Three Injured in Rochdale
A man has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving following a serious road traffic collision in Rochdale that left three people injured.
The crash occurred on the evening of Wednesday, May 1st, at around 7:45pm on the A58 Halifax Road near the junction with Entwistle Road. Emergency services, including Greater Manchester Police, paramedics, and fire crews, responded swiftly to reports of a two-vehicle collision involving a grey Audi A3 and a white Ford Fiesta.
On arrival, first responders found a scene of significant wreckage, with both vehicles sustaining extensive damage. Witnesses described hearing a loud bang and seeing debris strewn across the road, with one car reportedly spun onto the pavement. Several members of the public rushed to help those trapped in the vehicles before emergency crews arrived.
Three people, including two passengers from the Ford Fiesta and the driver of the Audi, were taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. One woman in her twenties reportedly suffered suspected fractures, while another man sustained head injuries. The driver of the Audi, a man in his 30s, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said:
*”We were called at around 7:45pm on Wednesday 1 May 2025 to reports of a collision on Halifax Road, Rochdale. Emergency services attended, and three individuals were taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. A man has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving and remains in custody for questioning.”*
Police closed a section of Halifax Road for several hours while collision investigators worked at the scene. Diversions were put in place, and traffic was disrupted well into the night. Officers conducted roadside examinations and recovered CCTV footage from nearby shops and houses as part of their ongoing investigation.
Local residents expressed shock over the incident, with some calling for more to be done to address reckless driving in the area. “This road is a nightmare at times,” said one shopkeeper. “There are constant near-misses, and people treat it like a racetrack. It was only a matter of time before something serious happened.”
Police have urged any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the incident or the moments leading up to it to come forward. They are particularly keen to speak to drivers who may have seen the Audi A3 or Ford Fiesta shortly before the crash.
This incident marks another worrying case amid growing concerns about drug driving across Greater Manchester. GMP has stepped up patrols and random roadside testing in recent months in a bid to clamp down on offenders.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Greater Manchester Police on 101 quoting log number 3122 of 01/05/2025 or to report anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
