Man who killed 1, injured 2 in MacArthur Mall shooting found guilty of manslaughter.
NORFOLK — A man who claimed self-defence when he shot three people at the MacArthur Centre mall in April 2022 was convicted guilty of manslaughter on Wednesday. It was Gary Moore’s second trial in the matter. His first trial concluded last year, with a jury condemning him on two charges and deadlocking on a third.
Moore told police that he was shopping with a companion when some males who had previously harassed his friend over money returned to the store. He stated that one of the men, Roosevelt McKinney Jr., threatened to murder them, struck them, and attempted to loot them. Moore claimed he believed McKinney had a pistol, so he pulled out his own and began firing. McKinney was struck twice in the back and once in the leg while running. Two innocent onlookers, a man and a woman, were each shot in the leg. McKinney was pronounced dead soon after arriving at the hospital. Police found a gun near where he fell outside the mall. Moore’s sentencing is planned for July 11.
