Mark Robins sums up Stoke City’s chances of causing upset vs Leeds United at Elland Road

Today could be the day that Leeds United clinch promotion back to the Premier League and secure their place in the top two, if The Whites can better Sheffield United’s result.

Another jam-packed fixture list sees all 24 Championship sides in action as Leeds play host to 15th-placed Stoke at Elland Road. A side that have improved under the guidance of new manager Mark Robins.

Robins has guided Stoke to three wins from the last five games and guided The Potters away from the clutches of relegation. But Robins could be without six Stoke players on Monday, including a key trio.

Ben Gibson, Jordan Thompson and Eric Bocat could all be missing when 3pm arrives at Elland Road. A win takes Leeds to 94 points, eight clear of Chris Wilder’s Blades before they face Burnley this evening.

Mark Robins says Stoke will need some luck to beat Leeds away

While Stoke have improved, this still looks like a Leeds win. Stoke have been poor this season and had it not been for the experience of Robins, they could quite easily have been staring relegation in the face.

The Potters have won their last two matches however, and will be confident in the knowledge that seven points separate them from the bottom three. They can come to Elland Road and play with some freedom.

Ahead of the game, Robins said he believes his side will need some “luck” if they are going to go to Leeds and get a result against Daniel Farke’s men, who have recorded three consecutive Championship wins.

“We go to Elland Road next,” Robins told the Stoke Sentinel. “That is a tough game. There’s no doubt about it. It’s a tough game. We are going to have to be really good, have a bit of luck and be really good.

“We can go there and really enjoy it and then get ready for our final home game on Friday after that. In the meantime we can enjoy this tonight and then get back to work tomorrow,” the Stoke boss added.

Mark Robins record vs Daniel Farke will give Leeds confidence

Robins is a wily old character and incredibly experienced not only in The Football League, but in the Championship. If anyone knows how to go and spoil the Elland Road party, it is Robins – even with Stoke.

His work as Coventry manager was excellent and ultimately, Frank Lampard is benefitting from the work put in by Robins as Sky Blues boss. A poor start to the season cost him his Coventry role, perhaps harshly.

In six games against Farke during his time at Norwich and then Leeds, Robins has only won once and it came in April 2024 during Leeds’ blip in the race to catch Leicester and Ipswich – a 2-1 loss at Coventry.
