Mason may potentially pay a £1.7 million “monster” to get West Brom’s next Jonny Evans.

As Ryan Mason takes on his first official management position at the helm of the Baggies, West Bromwich Albion has boldly placed their confidence in the unknown ahead of the next season.

Mason has already served as Tottenham Hotspur‘s temporary manager, but this is a completely different situation for the 33-year-old to adjust to. There is optimism that his new style can eventually lead the West Midlands team back to the Premier League.

Mason will undoubtedly be active in the transfer market looking for new players to make his imprint on his new team in order to increase his chances of being promoted right away. Experienced additions such to Jonny Evans‘ success tale may be on the horizon.

When the Baggies were regularly playing in the Premier League, Evans was a mainstay in the middle of the defence, and with good reason—the Northern Irishman hardly ever made a mistake at the Hawthorns.

Evans’ productive time at West Brom

Having made seven Premier League appearances for Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United last season, the 37-year-old is still remarkably active this late in his playing career.

Evans made 96 games for the then-top-flight team over three seasons, so even if he was just released by the Red Devils, it doesn’t take away from his great time with the Baggies.

Aside from skilfully carrying out his defensive responsibilities, Evans would amass a respectable 15 clean sheets throughout his three Premier League seasons at the Hawthorns. The dependable centre-back also contributed an outstanding five goals and four assists.

With this defensive target, West Brom may be on the verge of acquiring their next Evans-like player. As a result, the behemoth in question shares the 37-year-old’s understated demeanour while also often turning in excellent but unimpressive back-row performances.

The new Evans might be acquired by West Brom.

With the long-term objective of the Baggies being a Premier League regular once more, like they were under Evans, Mason will hope that bringing in tough fighters to this camp will help turn their immediate promotion ambitions into a reality.

Mason and West Brom may be looking to acquire a more modern version of the Northern Irishman, and Nathaniel Phillips, a centre-back for Liverpool, is apparently on their shopping list, according to The Athletic.

The £1.7 million brute has frequently had to settle for a supporting role at Anfield, but he has sometimes displayed his talent for the Reds. This stylish move at the San Siro stands out as one of his best Liverpool moments to date.

In addition to displaying his defensive prowess more generally while on loan in the EFL, the 6-foot-3 “monster”—as he was once called by Jurgen Klopp—has amassed a favourable seven clean sheets from his meagre 19 top-flight appearances on Merseyside.

The 28-year-old was especially impressive during the previous season while on loan at Derby County, when he helped the Rams avoid relegation by winning an impressive average of six duels per Championship match.

He would be expected to join Mason‘s men and be just as powerful, but their primary objective would be advancement rather than survival.

Although this wouldn’t be an incredible acquisition that would make Hawthorns fans jump out of their seats, Phillips may be exactly what West Brom needs to bolster their defence in preparation for a drive for promotion. Having previously worked for a top Premier League team, such as Evans, he may be a valuable acquisition.

Like Evans did all those years ago, he may even become a top-flight star with the Baggies if he stays stable and fits in properly.
