Mateus Fernandes admits he wants a change of ‘winning’ scenery over the summer.

Mateus Fernandes expressed a desire for a winning environment at Southampton, something the team has to address over the summer.
Recently, FA Cup winners Crystal Palace enquired about Mateus Fernandes. Understandably, this adds to Saints fans’ concerns about losing their finest player this summer. However, the St. Mary’s faithful still have a safety net in the back of their thoughts. That’s because Southampton was the first team to assist Portuguese talent in making the transfer to Europe’s top league, and Mateus will always be thankful to the Saints. That only adds to the adoration he’s received from club fans this season.
But will this emotional connection be enough to keep the ambitious young prodigy? Unfortunately, it does not feel that way. Intriguingly, while praising the fans’ and club’s support during his Saints career, Mateus recently made an open admission about what he misses here.
Mateus Fernandes wishes for a winning environment next season
Mateus spoke to the Daily Echo about his Southampton predicament, adding, “They have good players, a good coach, and the stadium atmosphere is very nice.” So, yeah, it is a dream come true, but I miss the thrill of victory.” Honestly, this allegation may not sit well with some Saints fans, but for Mateus, a 20-year-old, it demonstrates nothing but his winning mindset. On the other hand, this serves as a wake-up call for Southampton, who must improve if they want to keep Mateus Fernandes. Whether you like it or not, the club has a choice to make: offer the midfielder with a guarantee to return to winning ways in the Championship next season or give in to his sky-high transfer demands.
After all, with teams like Crystal Palace beckoning with their Europa League promise and Nottingham presenting with their UCL hope, why would Mateus stay at Southampton if not to win? For Southampton, however, it all comes down to making the proper managerial decision to lay the groundwork for a successful endeavour. The clock is ticking.
