Michael Carrick lands new role just one week after Middlesbrough sackingp

Michael Carrick, head coach of Middlesbrough arrives

Michael Carrick will be back inside a football stadium this weekend – but as a player rather than a manager. The former Middlesbrough boss only left Boro last week, but is one of the latest stars to be confirmed for this weekend’s Soccer Aid.

The 43-year-old parted company with Boro last week following a review into what was ultimately a dissapointing season on Teesside. Boro finished in 10th place in the Championship table and, although they were in with a chance of making the play-offs on the final, the campaign was well below the club’s ambitions.

Boro are now conducting a search for Carrick’s replacement, with the likes of Rob Edwards, Steve Cooper and Danny Rohl heavily linked with the job.

Carrick, too, is assessing his options for the coming season, and has already been linked with the Bristol City role following Liam Manning’s decision to join Norwich City.

However, he will be back on a football pitch on Sunday (June 15) as part of the England side to take on the Rest of the World XI in the popular Soccer Aid clash.

He will come up against former Manchester City team-mate John O’Shea, who will play for the opposition at Old Trafford. He is the latest in a long list of ex-players and celebrities who have confirmed their participation.

Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes, Jermain Defoe and Jill Scott will feature for England, while showbiz names such as Tom Grennan and Louis Tomlinson will play, along with boxing legends Tyson Fury and Tony Bellew.
