Michael Carrick ‘learned a lot’ from Jose Mourinho before Middlesbrough job but one key skill clearly evaded him

Michael Carrick spent three seasons in charge of Middlesbrough, and he helped take the club to within a whisker of reaching the play-offs in his tenure; however, his failure to achieve promotion brought about the end of his stint in charge.

It was hoped Carrick could have achieved similar exploits to his former Manchester United coaching colleague, Kieran McKenna, in his work with Ipswich Town.

Rob Edwards has replaced Carrick at the helm of Middlesbrough, and he will need to prove he is an upgrade on their former boss after his last spell with Luton Town.

However, this never came to fruition, and Carrick may now take time away from the game to assess and learn from some of his mistakes at Middlesbrough.

Carrick failed to learn ruthless skill from his time with Jose Mourinho

Michael Carrick was brought into Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff immediately after he retired from football, with the former midfielder believing this time to be incredibly beneficial to his coaching career.

He spent a number of seasons before opting to take the managerial role at Middlesbrough, and he believes before assuming the position he admitted that he ‘learned a lot’ while talking on Rio Ferdinand Presents.

Carrick said: “He’s unbelievable at working a player out quickly, like whether that’s performance-wise or mentality-wise or attitude-wise or anything.

“And he said a few things about certain players to me at the time, and I was a little bit like, ‘Not sure, but I liked it. I was like, ‘Oh, that was a bit extreme or whatever, but then over time it proved to be, and I was like, ‘You’ve seen that quick and are being quite decisive.

“He just had an eye for that, and he sensed it, and he was all about feeling, and sometimes you say, ‘So I learned a lot from that of seeing that and making calls on players and what you see you’re going to get from them in the next six months or a year, you know, because I was probably a little bit more about always giving the benefit of the doubt.”

The ability to be ruthless at times is key as a manager, and it is a skill that does not come naturally to Carrick, as he explained with Ferdinand; however, he did demonstrate his other qualities as a manager and coach.

Ali Maxwell outlines Michael Carrick’s work on developing players at Middlesbrough

EFL expert Ali Maxwell spoke about the job Carrick did while at Middlesbrough and the situation around his dismissal on Not The Top 20. Maxwell is certain Carrick has left strong foundations for whoever comes in next.

He said: “Yeah I feel sorry for him due to how the team looked in the second half of the season — as you alluded to. I don’t think that helped him.

“Also, I think that the club should give him a lot of credit and thanks because it’s been very clear in the last few years that they want to sort of trade well in the transfer market.

“That means selling players as much as it does buying players, and they should thank him for his part in that, having been the most successful part of the football club over the last couple of years.

“Morgan Rogers, [Emmanuel] Latte Lath, and soon to be Hayden Hackney if reports are to be believed. You know, Carrick plays a massive role in both the progression of those players in the belief that he put in those players.”
