Michael Carrick’s True Middlesbrough Season Reflections After Recent ‘Failure’ Response
Michael Carrick has opened up with an honest and measured reflection on Middlesbrough’s 2024/25 campaign, admitting disappointment with the final outcome but remaining optimistic about the club’s direction under his leadership. After narrowly missing out on a play-off spot, the season has been widely viewed by some supporters and pundits as a missed opportunity—but Carrick is keen to offer a more nuanced perspective.
Following a season that saw flashes of promise but also stretches of inconsistency, Carrick acknowledged the frustrations felt by fans. “Of course, when you set out with certain goals and don’t hit them, it can feel like failure,” he said. “But it’s never as simple as success or failure. There’s a lot of growth that’s taken place, and that’s what I have to focus on.”

Carrick pointed to a difficult autumn run where Boro struggled to turn performances into points. “That period really hurt us. Despite the setbacks, Carrick insisted the team’s identity and foundations remain strong. “We never lost the belief in what we were trying to build. The lads gave everything, and as a coach, that’s all you can ask for. The style, the intent, the unity—it was there. We just have to improve on the details and find that extra edge.”
Carrick has faced questions about his future in the past weeks, but he made it clear he remains committed to the project at Boro. “I’m here for the long term. I believe in this group, I believe in the direction the club is heading. Sometimes, a step back can set you up for two steps forward.”
The former Manchester United midfielder also touched on the club’s off-pitch progress, highlighting the support of the board and a strengthening connection with fans. “The fans have been unbelievable, even during the tough runs. They stuck with us, and that says everything. We’re building something bigger than one season.”
Looking ahead, Carrick hinted at changes in the summer, with recruitment a key focus. “We know where we need to strengthen. We’ve already had discussions and plans are in motion. It’s about adding the right personalities as well as the right players.”
While the season may not have ended in promotion or play-off glory, Carrick’s tone was one of quiet determination rather than defeat. “We’re disappointed, yes. But we’re not broken. This season has laid down more of the foundations we need to build success. We’ll come back stronger.”
