Middlesbrough bid for Blackburn defender Callum Brittain

Middlesbrough have submitted an official bid for Blackburn Rovers full-back Callum Brittain, intensifying their summer recruitment drive as the club looks to bolster key areas ahead of the new Championship season.

Boro’s interest in Brittain has been long-standing, and they have now taken the next step in trying to bring the 26-year-old to the Riverside. Talks between the two clubs have begun, with Blackburn weighing up their stance amid a potentially pivotal summer in terms of shaping their squad.

Brittain, who joined Rovers from Barnsley in 2022, has been a consistent performer at right-back, racking up over 80 appearances during his two seasons at Ewood Park. Known for his energetic displays, defensive tenacity, and ability to push forward, the former MK Dons academy graduate has attracted interest from several Championship rivals, but it is Middlesbrough who have made the first formal move.

Michael Carrick is believed to be an admirer of Brittain’s versatility and work ethic, viewing him as a player who can bring balance to Boro’s backline. With Tommy Smith still recovering from a long-term injury and Isaiah Jones more suited to an advanced role, Brittain would offer both depth and competition on the right side of defence.

Sources close to the situation suggest the bid is structured with performance-based add-ons, although the exact figure remains undisclosed. Blackburn, meanwhile, are yet to accept or reject the offer, and their response may depend on their ability to secure a replacement.

New Rovers boss John Eustace faces a delicate balancing act this summer, with several first-team players attracting interest and the club needing to manage finances wisely. Brittain’s sale could fund reinforcements elsewhere, but losing a key defender would be a significant blow just weeks before the new campaign kicks off.

Middlesbrough, who narrowly missed out on the play-offs last season, are aiming to push for promotion this term and have made strengthening their defence a top priority. Carrick has already added depth in midfield and attack, and Brittain is seen as a player who could slot seamlessly into his high-tempo system.

The coming days are expected to be crucial, with Boro hopeful of making progress before their next pre-season outing. Should a deal be agreed, personal terms with Brittain are not expected to pose a problem, as the player is understood to be open to the move.

For now, the ball is in Blackburn’s court as they decide whether to cash in on one of their most reliable performers or stand firm in a bid to build a more competitive squad under Eustace. Either way, Middlesbrough’s intent is clear — they mean business this summer.
