Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards on successful training-ground move

The fact that Middlesbrough’s summer set-piece efforts paid off in Saturday’s friendly tie with Rangers makes Rob

Edwards very happy.

In their 2-2 draw at Ibrox, Boro scored twice from set pieces. In the first half, Neto Borges scored from a corner, and

Dael Fry added a second goal after the break after a free kick had been sent to the back post

Edwards was happy to see Boro’s players doing some of their previously practiced routines over the weekend after

spending time with his coaches working on set pieces.

In their final two friendlies, [[Boro]] will play Hartlepool United tomorrow and Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday.

He want to see his team provide more of a danger from open play, but he anticipates that set pieces will be a crucial

component of their offensive toolkit this season.

“We have put a lot of effort into it,” the Boro manager stated. However, I have no doubt that Michael Carrick and his

team would have done it before us as well. I don’t want to come out as disparaging anything that came before us, but

sometimes that’s just the way things are.

“They must have put in a lot of effort in the past, but it’s good for us to receive those benefits. Being able to score

various kinds of goals is fantastic.

“We had a perfectly good goal ruled out in the first half [at Rangers] for TC [Tommy Conway] as well. It should have

been 2-0 at half-time because he’s onside, no doubt about it.
