Middlesbrough Eye Swansea City’s Josh Key Amid £5m Valuation
Middlesbrough are among the clubs keeping close tabs on Swansea City’s Josh Key, with the full-back attracting interest this summer.
Key, 25, has grown into one of Swansea’s standout players since his arrival from Exeter City in 2023. His energetic displays down the right flank — often combining defensive duties with attacking flair — have made him a key figure at the Swansea.com Stadium.
According to journalist Alan Nixon on Patreon, the versatile defender now carries a £5million price tag. Middlesbrough, managed by Rob Edwards, are believed to have enquired about his availability as they look to strengthen their defensive options in this transfer window.
Key’s style of play has drawn notable comparisons in the past. Speaking last year, former Swansea boss Luke Williams likened him to a young Gareth Bale, referencing Bale’s early days at Tottenham Hotspur.
“He’s like a Gareth Bale-type,” Williams told *BBC Sport*. “There was a period at Tottenham where Harry Redknapp forgot to tell him he was a full-back and just told him he was in the team. He interpreted that as ‘I’ll just do whatever I want then’ — in a good way, of course. It’s enjoyable to see Josh expressing himself the way he has, with such focus and concentration for the team.
“He’s an exciting player. He’s supposed to be playing right-back — but I don’t think anyone told Josh that.”
Middlesbrough, who are keen to bolster their squad ahead of the new Championship campaign, may view Key as an ideal fit for their system. However, Swansea’s valuation means any potential suitor will need to stump up serious cash to land the defender.
With competition likely and Swansea keen to hold on to one of their prized assets, the coming weeks could prove decisive in shaping Key’s future.
