Middlesbrough Fans Will Be Praying Rob Edwards Doesn’t Sign One Former Luton Player for Boro This Summer
Middlesbrough’s managerial hunt is underway following the departure of Michael Carrick, and former Luton Town boss Rob Edwards has quickly emerged as a serious contender for the Riverside hot seat. But if the club does hand Edwards the reins, many Boro fans will be hoping he doesn’t bring one particular familiar face from his Luton days along for the ride.
Carrick was relieved of his duties after steering Boro to a disappointing 10th-place finish in the Championship—a regression from the promotion push fans had been dreaming of just 12 months prior. Expectations were high, but inconsistency, a leaky defence, and a lack of attacking edge saw the club miss out on the play-offs entirely.
With Carrick gone, Middlesbrough’s focus has shifted to finding the right successor—someone who can reinvigorate the squad and reignite their promotion ambitions. Among the names being considered are Marti Cifuentes, who impressed with QPR before his departure, and Steve Cooper, whose stock remains high despite a tough stint at Leicester that ended in November.
But it’s Rob Edwards, the former Luton Town manager, who has attracted considerable attention. Edwards guided Luton to a fairytale promotion to the Premier League in 2023, cementing his reputation as one of the brightest young coaches in English football. Though things didn’t work out for him in the top flight, his ability to build a cohesive unit on a modest budget makes him an appealing option for a club like Middlesbrough.
Still, Boro fans may be cautious about Edwards for one key reason—concern over the kind of players he might target in the transfer market, especially those he worked with at Luton. And there is one name in particular that would set alarm bells ringing: Carlton Morris.
Morris, who played a key role in Luton’s promotion campaign under Edwards, has divided opinion in recent years. While undeniably hardworking and physically imposing, his inconsistency in front of goal and tendency to go missing in big games have left fans frustrated. His Premier League stint was underwhelming, and although he’s proven he can lead the line in the Championship, many Boro supporters feel the club should aim higher as they look to reshape their attacking options.
With Middlesbrough in need of a more clinical striker to spearhead their promotion push, the prospect of Edwards turning to Morris would be viewed by many as a step backward. The Teesside faithful want ambition and quality, not loyalty signings that could limit the squad’s potential.
Of course, nothing is confirmed yet. Edwards hasn’t been appointed, and no transfer moves have been made. But as speculation builds, Boro fans will be watching closely—not just to see who becomes their next manager, but what kind of vision that manager brings with them.
