Preparations are well underway at Middlesbrough for the 2025/26 Championship campaign.

Following Michael Carrick’s resignation, the North East side has a new manager in Rob Edwards, with the ultimate goal of regaining promotion next season.

Boro are yet to finalize any deals this summer, with Josh Coburn, Anfernee Dijksteel, and George Gitau departing the Riverside.

Furthermore, Ben Doak, Samuel Iling-Junior, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Ryan Giles have all returned to their parent clubs after loan periods.

Football League World’s Middlesbrough fan analyst, Liam Day, has identified one current Boro player who could benefit from a temporary departure from the club.

Micah Hamilton advised to exit Middlesbrough on loan

“A player of ours that needs to go out on loan is Micah Hamilton,” Liam told me. “He was on loan last season but didn’t play.

“He came in with so much fanfare, but it was always viewed as a long-term project. When he played, he didn’t seem to be into it; he was still unskilled. I believe that was quite evident.

“Last season, he went on loan to Stockport County. He did not play at all, therefore I’m not sure what team to transfer him to, possibly a lower-tier League One club.

“At the moment, the most important thing for him is to obtain game time. He is yearning for growth and needs it.

“There are a few younger players on the team, but I believe they, like Alex Gilbert, are approaching the time where they must either go permanently or push their way into the first squad.

“But Hamilton is only 21, so he still has some time. He’s on the verge of leaving, as this season appears to be a turning point for him. I believe he simply needs to get out and get some game time, which I doubt he will get with us.

Micah Hamilton would benefit from another temporary move

Micah Hamilton of Manchester City

Hamilton joined Boro last summer with a lot of fanfare following his good performances at Manchester City.

The 21-year-old scored in the Champions League for Pep Guardiola’s team, demonstrating his great talent.

However, he failed to impress with both Middlesbrough and Stockport County last season, trying to adjust to the physicality of the EFL and truly demonstrate his abilities with either side.

The winger only made five appearances for the Hatters, which does not auger well for his future at the Riverside.

Based on these performances, it appears unlikely that Edwards will give Hamilton much minutes, implying that a loan deal is the most logical choice.

Another temporary move to the third division would offer Boro’s talent with consistent playing time, which is exactly what he requires at this stage of his development.

Hamilton clearly has enormous potential, and he may require another change of scenery to help him adjust to the EFL at a lower competitive level.
