Middlesbrough is in negotiations to acquire a Dutch winger who scored six goals in the 2024–2025 Eredivisie.

As negotiations between the Teessiders and NEC Nijmegen begin, Middlesbrough has dispatched officials to the Netherlands to speak with potential new recruit Sontje Hansen.

Journalist Lorenzo Lepore claims that while Rob Edwards’ first team squad seeks to be strengthened this summer, the Championship club is negotiating a contract for the winger with their Eredivisie opponents.

Since joining Nijmegen on a free transfer from Ajax two years ago, the 23-year-old has made 64 appearances in the Dutch top division, gaining experience at the Eredivisie level in the previous two seasons.

In the last two years, he has helped the squad finish sixth and eighth in the standings with 12 goals and 8 assists.

Hansen is apparently a priority target for Middlesbrough, who are considering a deal for the striker.

The Championship team is hoping for a breakthrough in negotiations as they have dispatched agents to the Netherlands to speak with the player and try to work out a deal. This might be Boro’s first summer transfer.

After finishing 10th in the standings the previous season, which resulted in Michael Carrick’s firing as manager, Middlesbrough will be eager to bolster the team.

Although a deal to bring Hansen to English football has not yet been completed, negotiations are still continuing on with the Eredivisie team.

Since the forward’s contract is set to expire in the summer of 2027, Nijmegen will still have some negotiating power and won’t have to cash in right now.

Middlesbrough might benefit from acquiring Sontje Hansen, who could eventually replace Ben Doak.

Ben Doak celebrates with Middlesbrough supporters

After Edwards was hired, Middlesbrough will aim to contend for promotion to the Premier League this season, but they will need to bring in some new players to do that.

In the Championship, if he shows up, Hansen should be able to maintain his strong performance in the Eredivisie from the previous two seasons.

Ben Doak, a Liverpool loanee, excelled at the Riverside Stadium the previous season, so any winger joining Boro this summer will have huge shoes to fill.

Since Hansen is only 23, he still has time to get better if he can start playing English football right away.

Getting this resolved will be a show of progress ahead of the new season next month, as Boro supporters will be eager to see the team try to strengthen this summer.
