Middlesbrough man tells ‘his side of the story’ & wants transfer with talks advanced

Middlesbrough’s goalkeeper Zach Hemming is keen on making his St Mirren switch permanent.

ZACH Hemming says Middlesbrough know “his side of the story” with the goalkeeper keen on making his St Mirren switch permanent this summer.

It comes as Buddies boss Stephen Robinson reveals talks between the two clubs are “quite advanced”.

Hemming still has a year to to run on his Middlesbrough contract, with the goalkeeper admitting the power is in Boro’s hands. But after two hugely successful loan spells north of the border and with his family settled in Paisley, Hemming now wants to make his St Mirren stay permanent.

Hemming helped St Mirren qualify for Europe for the first time in the club’s history in the 2023/24 season and Robinson was desperate to re-sign the keeper last summer, but Boro instead opted to send him to Leyton Orient in League One.

That move didn’t go to plan and Hemming was recalled in January and returned to St Mirren, where he’s again been a big hit.

Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough verdict: Hope, ‘different phases’ & ‘big negatives’

Quizzed on his future, Hamming admitted: “I think there’s been talks. Obviously it’s one of those things where I’ve still got another year left on my contract at Middlesbrough so it’s probably down to them more than anyone.

“I’ve said my side of the story and I think my family have obviously spoken, too. They’ve said their point of view and see what happens. But I think it’s just down to Middlesbrough and then the two clubs to agree a deal.

“It might happen, it might not. But I just want to enjoy my football, the last two games and then in the summer I can speak about it a little bit more.

“I don’t really get involved with it, just because I just like getting my head down and enjoying football [and not] overthinking it too much. Maybe I try and fix my performance when I’m talking about contracts. So, I just leave it down to my agent and talk from there.”

Hemming hasn’t played a single game for Boro and has had seven separate loan spells over the course of the last seven years. As well as being happy on the pitch at St Mirren, he says his wife and children are settled in the area.

He told the Daily Record: “I think it’s probably easier for me to say it is or it’s not [easy to settle] because obviously I’ve got 25 lads in the squad that I can make friends with. It’s just obviously my missus and the kids, they’ve got to make their own friends.

“My missus has got a job up here at the minute so she’s making a lot more friends. But if I maybe move somewhere else or go somewhere else on loan, then I’ve got to start all over again.

“She’s moved away from her family, moved away from her friends back home and just helped my career and get me settled and hopefully I can just get her settled for a few years.”

St Mirren boss Robinson is hopeful a deal will now be reached with Boro.

He said: “You look at his clean sheets already and you look at the points we’ve gathered since Christmas, and he’s been a big part in that.

“Talks are quite advanced with Middlesbrough. We’ve got other plans to get other players into the football club too. The season isn’t finished yet, but usually when that finishes then things start to move a little bit quicker.”
