Callum Brittain is Middlesbrough’s primary summer target for right wingbacks.
Middlesbrough are more confident that a deal will be made with Blackburn Rovers to sign Callum Brittain.
Boro had previous bids rejected for the right-sided defender, but they remain interested in the 27-year-old. He was regarded as their top target for the position this summer following the departure of Anfernee Dijksteel, and he is equally at ease playing as a full-back and wing-back.
Though a deal between the two Championship clubs has not yet been confirmed, Teesside Live understands that recent talks have progressed significantly, and there is a growing optimism that Boro will complete the transaction. No sum has been confirmed, although some reports suggest a transaction for £3.5 million.
Brittain, who is in the final year of his Blackburn deal, is said to have stated that he prefers a move to Boro this summer. That’s despite interest from his former Rovers manager, John Eustace, who now leads Derby County.
The Brittain news comes after Boro agreed on a fee with Ipswich Town to sell Hayden Hackney. The midfielder has not yet agreed terms with the Tractor Boys, as he considers whether to accept the Championship offer or to hold out for a Premier League move that is not currently on the table.

While Boro have continued to pursue a number of incoming transfer deals to bolster Rob Edwards’ options ahead of the new season, certain transactions and targets are contingent on Boro obtaining funds from a Hackney sale. Brittain’s possible relocation has proceeded, however.
Brittain, a pacey, modern-day offensive full-back, has emerged as a major player in the Championship in recent years. Encouragingly for Boro, he’s proven more than capable of playing on the right side of a four as well as at wing-back – with Edwards preferring the latter at Boro thus far but not committing to it as a permanent solution.
