Middlesbrough transfer claim as Tony Mowbray delivers promotion verdict after Sunderland success

Tony Mowbray would love to see Middlesbrough join Sunderland and Newcastle United in the Premier League again.

Tony Mowbray believes Middlesbrough is closer than they think to joining Sunderland and Newcastle United in the Premier League, and he hopes they achieve that goal next season.

Boro had a dismal campaign last season and fell short of their top-six hopes, placing tenth after a closing-day defeat at Coventry City denied them a play-off position. To make matters worse, rivals Newcastle United ended Boro’s run as the last North East club to win a major cup, while Leeds United and Sunderland were both promoted back to the top flight.

Boro are presently conducting a review to determine the root cause of their failings last season, as well as devising solutions that they think will put them in a better position to challenge for promotion in the following season. Boro veteran Mowbray, who has been engaged in the promotion race as a manager at various teams in previous years and spent much of last season watching Boro before his brief stint at West Brom, believes they are just a couple of solid additions away.

Mowbray told Red Radio: “I don’t believe Middlesbrough are that far away from competing at the level that Sunderland accomplished this year. I’d think they’re only one or two players away. If they can have a successful summer transfer market, I believe they can have a very solid season next year.

“The North East should have three Premier League teams. It’s a true football hotbed, full with emotion and enthusiasm. I believe it is critical that they all attend because the games are all really large. It is about the people, the supporters, and the stadiums. There is nowhere more dynamic than the UK’s working-class areas.

“The North East and Merseyside… These are the football hotbeds. I truly hope everything aligns for Middlesbrough next season and they find themselves there, back in the Premier League.”
In addition to performing an in-depth examination, Boro’s recruitment team is still planning for the summer transfer market. They’ve already identified five crucial positions to strengthen this summer (right-back, centre-back, centre-midfielder, winger, and striker), as well as their targets for each. However, because it is early in the summer, players are on vacation, leaving little possibility to move deals forward.

There have already been several names connected with summer moves to the club, but Teesside Live knows that none are real targets.
