Midfielder ‘more likely’ to join Rangers than Leeds United after solid Sheffield Wednesday stint as claim made.

The midfielder has previously worked with Rangers’ head coach, Russell Martin. Following his time at Sheffield Wednesday, a midfielder is expected to join Rangers rather than Leeds United, according to a transfer report. Rumours have circulated during the early stages of transfer season, and the Light Blues have been linked to a number of players. They have been acquired by 49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh, with Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe serving as the latter’s vice chairman at Ibrox. 49ers Enterprises also owns Leeds, who have recently been promoted to the Premier League. They are also being associated with players, one of them being Shea Charles, who is back at new Rangers head coach Russell Martin’s old club Southampton, after an impressive stint with Sheffield Wednesday.
Why star is more likely to go to Rangers over Leeds United
The Daily Mail claims that the Elland Road club ‘admires’ Charles, who has appeared 43 times in the English Championship for the Owls after playing 38 times for his parent club. Rangers’ midfield could reshuffle this summer, with Nico Raskin and Mohamed Diomande both linked with departures. According to transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey, the 21-year-old is more likely to rejoin Martin at Rangers rather than move to the Premier League. One financial component is also deemed non-issue. Bailey told Leeds United News: “He’s an intriguing character. It is more likely that he will join the Rangers. He’s not on a massive salary, and he definitely played under Russell Martin at Southampton.”
Martin’s side did had a winter recall option on Charles from Sheffield Wednesday last season, and before his departure, the now-Rangers manager said: “It’s gone exactly way we wanted it to [Shea’s loan], for him and us… We have the opportunity to recall Shea if we choose. But we’re not going to call him back until he’s going to come back in and play, impact the team, and be a major contributor for us. He should keep doing what he is doing. We will continue to examine our status and requirements.”
Russell Martin connection with Southampton midfielder
When Martin signed Charles from Manchester City in 2023, he stated of him: “Shea is a very talented, intelligent, and mature young player with great potential to develop his game with us.” He received an excellent education at Manchester City, progressing from an exceptional academy to the first team. We’ve been watching him closely, and we’re certain he has the skills to help us play the way we intend.”
Charles was also appreciative of Martin: “I feel that the way the manager’s going to play would really suit me, and obviously some of the players that I know (from City) did extremely well here last season in the Premier League, so there’s no reason why I can’t come in and do the same. He (Russell Martin) contacted me the other night, explaining that the possession-based football that he wants to play will benefit me, and I can’t wait.”
