Mike Fondop Aiming to Win Promotion with Oldham Athletic

Former Stanway Rovers striker Mike Fondop is hoping to write his name into Oldham Athletic folklore by helping the Latics seal promotion back to the Football League – with a victory over Southend United in this weekend’s National League play-off final at Wembley.

Fondop, known for his powerful presence and aerial ability, has been an instrumental figure for Oldham throughout the season. Now, with one final hurdle to clear, he is fully focused on guiding the club back to League Two, just two years after they were relegated from the EFL for the first time in their history.

Speaking ahead of the massive showdown, the Cameroonian-born frontman reflected on his journey from non-league obscurity to one of English football’s biggest stages.

“Playing at Wembley is a dream for any footballer,” Fondop said. “I’ve come a long way since my time at Stanway Rovers. Back then, I was just trying to enjoy my football and work hard. I never imagined I’d have the chance to fight for promotion at a club like Oldham, and especially not at a place like Wembley.”

Fondop spent part of his early career at Stanway Rovers, a club based near Colchester, where he earned a reputation for his physical strength and eye for goal. His performances caught the eye of clubs higher up the football pyramid, and his journey has since taken him to various clubs, including Wrexham, Chesterfield, and Burton Albion.

Now settled at Oldham, Fondop has become a fan favourite thanks to his work ethic, hold-up play, and crucial goals. His presence in the dressing room has also been praised by manager Micky Mellon, who has credited the striker with helping to build a positive, determined atmosphere within the squad.

“Mike is a big character,” Mellon said. “He’s the kind of player who lifts the team with his energy. We’ll need all of that on Sunday because Southend are a very strong side.”

Indeed, Oldham face a tough test in Southend United, another proud club aiming to return to the Football League. The Shrimpers have been in impressive form and boast a dangerous attacking lineup. But Fondop is confident Oldham can rise to the occasion.

“We respect Southend, but we believe in ourselves,” he added. “The fans have been incredible all season. We want to do this for them – and for everyone who has stood by this club during the tough times.”

Fondop is expected to play a key role in Sunday’s final, whether from the start or as an impact substitute. With his strength, experience, and big-game mentality, Oldham will be counting on him to deliver one more time.

For Fondop, the occasion represents more than just a chance for silverware—it’s an opportunity to cap a remarkable personal journey with a moment of glory.
