Mike Fondop explains decision to commit long‑term to Oldham Athletic
On 4 July 2025, Oldham Athletic confirmed that striker Mike Fondop had signed a fresh two‑year deal, tying him to Boundary Park through the 2026–27 season
Fondop, aged 31, first arrived at Oldham on loan from Hartlepool United in January 2022. Over the subsequent seasons—first in the National League, then back in League Two—he forged an increasingly influential role. He was instrumental in the club’s return to the EFL in May 2025, finishing the 2024–25 league campaign as Oldham’s leading scorer with 18 goals, and earning both Supporters’ and Players’ Player of the Year awards .
In an official club interview following his contract signing, Fondop spoke passionately about the bond he feels with the club:
> “Oldham feels like home to me and the support I’ve received from the fans and everyone at the club has been incredible. I was always going to be staying, I have shared so many achievements and accomplishments here, I just love this club.”
That sense of belonging was a key factor in his decision. The club clearly resonated with him—not just as a workplace, but as a community where he’s valued and celebrated.
Stability and ambition also underlie the move. At 31, Fondop is in the prime of his footballing journey. A two-year contract offers both security and an opportunity to continue his upward trajectory at a club on the rise. Oldham’s management, clearly believing in his talents, has rewarded his consistency and goalscoring output. Fondop’s own commitment reflects a shared vision—together they aim to build on last season’s success and solidify their place in the Football League.
Reflecting on his motivations, Fondop added:
“I was always going to be staying… I just love this club.”
Such remarks reveal a player personally invested in Oldham’s progress—not just professionally, but emotionally. Fondop’s off‑field integration—presumably forged over three and a half seasons—has evidently made Oldham “feel like home”.
His contributions go beyond goals. Known for his work ethic and leadership in the dressing room, Fondop is a role model for younger teammates. His journey—from non‑league beginnings to EFL promotion—embodies the resilience and determination embraced by the club and their supporters. It’s a narrative that resonates, giving the fans a player they can cheer not only for his goals, but also for his character and story.
Oldham’s upcoming season begins on 2 August, away at MK Dons. The club will hope that Fondop continues to spearhead their attack, building on last season’s memorable return to League Two.
On the pitch and in the community, Fondop stands as one of Oldham’s leading figures. His new contract secures not just his services, but an ongoing chapter in a relationship that has proved mutually beneficial: a striker in his prime, and a club full of ambition.
