Millington Uncertain Over Future After Shaymen’s Play-Off Exit
Chris Millington admits he is uncertain about his future at FC Halifax Town following their disappointing exit from the National League play-offs. The Shaymen saw their promotion hopes dashed after a defeat that left players, staff, and supporters frustrated, and the manager now finds himself facing questions about what lies ahead.
Halifax bowed out of the play-offs after a narrow loss that brought an end to a season filled with both promise and inconsistency. The team had rallied well in the latter stages of the campaign to secure a play-off spot, but were unable to carry that momentum through to a successful promotion push.
Speaking after the defeat, Millington expressed his pride in the squad’s efforts but admitted that uncertainty surrounds his position at the club.
“Right now, I don’t know what the future holds,” he said. “These decisions are out of my hands. My job was to give everything for this team and this club, and I’ve done that. But conversations need to be had in the coming days.”
Millington, who took over managerial duties in 2022 following the departure of long-serving boss Pete Wild, has overseen a transitional period at The Shay. He helped the club navigate a number of challenges, including rebuilding the squad and managing tight resources. Despite the disappointment of missing out on promotion, Halifax showed glimpses of potential throughout the season under his guidance.
“We’ve built something here over the last couple of years that I think has real value,” Millington continued. “We’ve brought through young talent, created a strong team spirit, and established an identity on the pitch. But football is a results business, and I accept that.”
The club’s board is now expected to conduct a review of the season before making any decisions regarding Millington’s future. While some supporters have praised his leadership and tactical discipline, others believe a fresh approach may be needed to push the team over the line next time.
Millington, however, remains philosophical about his situation.
“I love this club. It’s been a privilege to be part of it and to work with such a committed group of players and staff. If this is the end of the road for me here, I’ll walk away with my head held high and with a huge amount of gratitude,” he said.
He also hinted at unfinished business, should he be given the chance to continue.
“I believe we’re not far off something special. With a few key additions and the continued development of the younger lads, this squad can go again next season and really challenge.”
For now, Millington will take time to reflect while the club considers its next steps. Whatever decision is made, his impact during a challenging period for Halifax Town will not be easily forgotten.
“We’ll see what happens,” he concluded. “I’ve given everything, and now it’s up to the club to decide where we go from here.”
