Millwall boss plans to address ‘bits that were really disappointing’ in Boro loss

MILLWALL boss Alex Neil plans to address the ‘bits that were really disappointing’ after the Lions’ 3-0 home defeat to Middlesbrough on Saturday, August 16.Neil’s side were the better team in the first half, taking six shots to Boro’s one, but headed into half-time with nothing to show for it after Casper De Norre’s volley was cleared off the line.

Boro started stronlgy after the interval and soon had the opening goal, with Hayden Hackney turning home Morgan Whittaker’s cut-back. The Lions nearly responded immediately when Josh Coburn met Femi Azeez’s cross, but his header hit both posts before bouncing clear.

Millwall struggled to create chances after that, while Boro scored two late goals to put the result beyond doubt.

Neil and his coaching staff intend to work on the poorer aspects of the Lions’ performance ahead of their clash with Sheffield United on Saturday, August 23.

“The first thing we need to do is go over the game,” Neil said in the post-match press conference following the game. “I think there were certain elements that we’ll be disappointed in ourselves.

“There were elements that we’ll be pretty pleased with. At the start of the game, I thought we were very good.

“Naturally, when we break it down, there’ll be a balance to it in terms of what we did well, what we can do better, and certainly bits that were really disappointing. We’ll have a discussion about them as we always do.

“If you’re a professional player now, it’s not like the olden days, where I come in and start shouting at everybody.

“They know what they’ve done and what they haven’t done, and we need to highlight those bits that are good, but also the bits that are not so good. Then we need to try and fix them, on the training patch, in the next game, and make sure that we’re a better team in the next game.”
