Millwall set to complete free transfer signing of 16-cap international goalkeeper

Millwall set to complete free transfer signing of 16-cap international goalkeeper

Millwall are reportedly close to finalising a deal to sign Burton Albion goalkeeper Max Crocombe.

As first reported by Will Scott of News At Den, it has been revealed that the Lions are set to recruit the 31-year-old on a free transfer, as Crocombe’s contract runs down with the Brewers at the end of June.

It will be the first signing of the summer transfer window for Alex Neil’s side, who will be aiming to build on such a positive end to the season.

The former Sunderland head coach managed to stamp his authority down on the squad, developing a style of play that suited his players down to the ground.

It was almost enough to see them miraculously squeak into the top six, but a final day defeat to Burnley ensured that they would narrowly miss out despite such a spirited performance.

Now, the South East London club looks to go again, with optimism building that Neil and his players can carry their previous momentum into the upcoming campaign.

As reported, Millwall are close to confirming the signing of Burton Albion shot-stopper Max Crocombe on a free transfer.

The 31-year-old is set to have a medical at the club and will become the first summer arrival once he signs on the dotted line, strengthening the goalkeeping department heading into next season.

Crocombe is a figure possessing plenty of experience throughout the EFL, making 55 combined appearances in the fourth tier for the likes of Oxford United, Barnet, Carlisle and Grimsby Town. He helped the latter on their way to an FA Cup quarter-final in 2023, which included a fifth-round scalp over Southampton.

He also represents the New Zealand national team, making 16 appearances for his country to date.

The addition of a goalkeeper will have been a priority for Millwall given Liam Roberts’ move to Mansfield Town was confirmed earlier this month.

That leaves just Lukas Jensen – who will be out for a lot of the 2025-26 season with an achilles injury – and academy graduate George Evans as options, but the addition of a vastly experienced shot-stopper like Max Crocombe is exactly what is required to help equip themselves strongly enough for a relentless 46-game campaign.

It will be relieving for all connected with the Lions to see that they’re getting someone who isn’t on the decline in their career, with Crocombe featuring heavily for Burton Albion and proving he can be a solid addition for any team throughout the EFL pyramid.

While it will be a first taste of Championship action for the 31-year-old in his career, you have to feel he deserves this opportunity, and will be aiming to push his fellow teammates for a starting spot in the second tier.
