Miron Muslic sends a’short but strong’ message to Plymouth Argyle’s Green Army.

Former Arsenal and England player Jack Wilshere is the overwhelming frontrunner to succeed Muslic.

It is brief, almost mirroring his tenure as manager of Plymouth Argyle. Miron Muslic, who has left Home Park, has sent his first message to the Green Army, which is still struggling with his abrupt and almost unexpected departure from the club. The 42-year-old was named the new head coach of German heavyweights Schalke over the weekend, despite promising Argyle chairman Simon Hallett that he would return to Plymouth to oversee the club’s bid to return to the Championship at the first attempt.

After putting in place the personnel and structures that Muslic insisted on in the post-season review of Argyle’s relegation from the Championship in order to stay at Home Park, the Austrian-Bosnian couldn’t resist the temptation of attempting to turn around the fortunes of Schalke, a genuine fallen giant of German football. With his appointment now official, Muslic has taken to Instagram to give a personal ‘farewell’ to the Green Army who once idolised him. “It was short but intense, full of emotions,” Muslic wrote. “Sometimes stories don’t finish the way we want them to, and they aren’t what they seem to be, so I’ll end here and close this page.

“Green Army you will always have my respect, I wish Plymouth Argyle the very best.” It’s the kind of communication a heartbroken, jilted lover would expect from an ex-partner when they split ways. Cold and emotionless, but attempting to be balanced and objective, it is a long cry from Muslic’s statements to supporters at the beginning of May, when he declared his love for the Pilgrims. Perhaps Muslic should be reminded of his beliefs on loyalty and obligations. Prior to Morgan Whittaker’s departure for Middlesbrough in January, Muslic claimed he ‘did not show up’ for a vital Championship game against Burnley, which Whittaker later contradicted.

“Morgan is an Argyle player under contract here as long as nobody are paying the money we as an organisation demand, and paying his value,” Muslic told reporters. “He’s an Argyle player. He has responsibilities and obligations to Argyle. As I have stated, this is one of the reasons why Argyle has struggled in recent months. After Lan Holloway, Ryan Lowe, and Steven Schumacher, the Green Army should understand that what a manager says in public and what they genuinely feel can be very different, especially when something larger comes along.
