Monchi leading Aston Villa pursuit of player – 2 years after Middlesbrough exit

According to an Italian rumor, Aston Villa are interested in signing Udinese’s Martín Payero during the summer transfer season.

In September 2023, the 26-year-old departed Middlesbrough to join the Serie A club, where he appeared 56 times, including 37 league starts.

His preferred position is in the middle of the pitch, but he can also play attacking or defensive midfield. Italian journalist Alfredo Pedullà has written a brief report on Aston Villa’s interest in Payero.

Pedullà describes the Argentine as a midfielder with ‘excellent technical qualities’, which might lead to a summer transfer. Unai Emery’s squad likes the former Middlesbrough star, who was also on Napoli’s radar in the winter transfer window.

The newspaper says that Aston Villa director Monchi admires the South American’s profile and has been following him for some time. This suggests that the Spaniard is spearheading the Premier League club’s transfer pursuit.

The Villans have not yet engaged in ‘in-depth negotiations’. He has previous experience playing in England with Middlesbrough, and Aston Villa could bring him back in the future transfer season.

Payero’s contract runs until 2027, with an option for an additional year. Transfermarkt valued him at €6 million, although Udinese would undoubtedly seek a bigger fee before moving him.
