More than £11,000 Raised in Under 24 Hours to Help Family of Layton Carr After Newcastle Fatal Fire
More than £11,000 has been raised in less than a day to support the grieving family of 14-year-old Layton Carr, whose life was tragically cut short in a devastating house fire in Newcastle. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday in the Bill Quay area of Gateshead, has shocked the local community and prompted an outpouring of support.
Emergency services were called to the scene on Saturday morning, where they discovered a house engulfed in flames. Despite the efforts of fire crews and paramedics, Layton’s body was sadly found inside the property. Northumbria Police have since confirmed that a murder investigation has been launched and a 14-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the fire.
As news of the tragedy spread, friends, neighbours, and members of the wider Tyneside community rallied to support Layton’s heartbroken family. A GoFundMe campaign was quickly set up by family friend Leanne Bell with the goal of easing the financial burden on Layton’s parents as they come to terms with their unimaginable loss.
The fundraiser surpassed £11,000 in under 24 hours, with hundreds of people donating and leaving heartfelt messages in memory of the “loving, kind and funny” teenager. Many described Layton as a “bright soul” with a “heart of gold,” and said he would be deeply missed by all who knew him.
“We are absolutely heartbroken,” read a statement on the GoFundMe page. “Layton was a beautiful boy, full of life and love. His family are in pieces, and we want to do all we can to support them through this nightmare.”
Among those contributing were teachers and classmates from Layton’s school, neighbours who had known him since he was a toddler, and strangers moved by the heartbreaking news. Several messages spoke of the impact Layton had on his friends and the wider community.
The local school Layton attended also paid tribute, releasing a statement describing him as a “popular and caring student” and offering counselling and support to pupils and staff affected by the tragedy.
Northumbria Police have said that investigations are ongoing and have asked anyone with information to come forward. They confirmed that specialist officers are supporting Layton’s family and working closely with the community to provide reassurance in the wake of the incident.
Chief Superintendent Helena Barron said: “This is a tragic incident that has shocked us all. Our thoughts are with Layton’s loved ones, and we will continue to do everything we can to support them.”
As flowers, cards, and candles continue to be laid outside the family home, the growing GoFundMe total is a powerful testament to the compassion of the community and the lasting impact Layton Carr made in his short life.
The fundraiser remains open, and organisers have expressed their gratitude for the generosity shown so far. “Thank you to everyone who has donated or shared kind words,” Leanne Bell wrote. “This support means more than you can ever know.”
Police continue to appeal for witnesses or anyone with relevant CCTV or dashcam footage from the area on
the morning of the fire.
