More Than 50 Firefighters Tackle Large Blaze as Tamworth Unit Destroyed by Fire

More than 50 firefighters were deployed to battle a fierce blaze that tore through a commercial unit in Tamworth on Sunday afternoon, leaving the structure completely destroyed.

Emergency services were alerted around 1:45pm, with multiple 999 calls reporting thick black smoke billowing from an industrial estate off Lichfield Road. Crews from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, supported by colleagues from neighbouring counties, rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, they found the unit already well alight, with flames shooting through the roof and dense smoke visible for miles.

Video footage captured by local resident Fiona Ferguson shows dramatic scenes as plumes of smoke engulfed the sky and firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the inferno. Loud cracking noises could be heard as the fire consumed the structure, which has since been confirmed as a commercial warehouse used for storage and light manufacturing.

Firefighters used multiple hose reel jets and aerial ladder platforms to attack the fire from above and prevent it from spreading to adjoining units. Despite their best efforts, the building was completely gutted. Crews remained on site into the evening to damp down hot spots and monitor for flare-ups.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called to a large fire at a unit in the Lichfield Road area of Tamworth shortly before 2pm. On arrival, the unit was well alight and more than 10 appliances were mobilised to the scene, including aerial support. More than 50 firefighters were involved in bringing the blaze under control. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries.”

Nearby businesses and residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed due to the thick smoke, and roads surrounding the area were cordoned off to allow emergency access. The fire caused significant disruption, with traffic diverted for several hours while crews tackled the incident.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway, though it is too early to determine whether it was accidental or deliberate. Fire investigators were seen combing through the debris on Monday morning, alongside police forensic teams.

Witnesses described scenes of chaos and concern as the fire took hold. “It was terrifying how quickly it spread,” said one bystander. “Within minutes, the whole place was up in flames. The smoke was thick and choking, and you could feel the heat from quite a distance.”

The unit’s owners have not yet released a statement, but it is believed the building and its contents have been completely lost. Insurance assessors are expected to attend the scene later this week to begin estimating the damage.

As the investigation continues, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue has thanked the public for their patience and support during the incident. They have also encouraged anyone with information or footage of the blaze to come forward to assist their inquiries.

The large-scale response and swift action by emergency crews has been praised for preventing the fire from spreading further in what could have been a much worse disaster.
