Chris Wilder’s exit from Sheffield United surprised many people, including himself, this summer.
Sheffield United has undergone a summer of transition, with new Blades owners COH Sports considering a change of direction.
Following the extremely disappointing Championship play-off final defeat to Regis Le Bris’ Sunderland, Sheffield United’s management opted to dismiss Chris Wilder of his duties.
Following his surprise departure from Hull City, Sheffield United turned to Ruben Selles.
Wilder has since reacted to the Sheffield United owners’ decision, which surprised him.

Chris Wilder was stunned by the decision to be terminated by Sheffield United
Sheffield United responded excellently to their relegation from the Premier League the previous season, after competing with Leeds United and Burnley throughout the campaign.
After failing at the final hurdle at Wembley Stadium, many expected and thought that Chris Wilder would be given another season, but he was unexpectedly replaced by Portuguese coach Ruben Selles.
Wilder spoke with Sky Sports about the club’s decision, saying: “It stings, of course, and I wasn’t expecting it, but these things happen and you have to move on.
“I wish the club all the best – it’s a club I had a fantastic journey with on two spells.”
Wilder also mentioned the problems that the club faced last season, stating that he was surprised by the decision despite completing a good league campaign.
Ruben Selles will face pressure to improve on Chris Wilder’s tenure
Following the dismissal of Chris Wilder from Sheffield United, COH Sports made it plain this season that promotion to the Premier League is expected.
Ruben Selles will be hoping to improve on the 2024/25 season, as will the supporters, following the ownership’s decision to move Wilder on this summer.
The issue is that Sheffield United’s hierarchy may not have backed Selles in the summer transfer window, leaving them weaker than last season. With the remaining time in the window, Sheffield United should be able to bring in enough of extra talent to ensure Selles meets the board’s lofty expectations.
