Moyes: McKenna’s A Great Young Manager Doing a Fantastic Job at a Real Football Club
Even though Town was relegated back to the Championship after just one season back in the top division, Everton manager David Moyes feels his Blues counterpart Kieran McKenna has done a fantastic job at “a real football club.”
On Saturday, the Blues visit Goodison Park, the home of the Toffees since 1892, for their penultimate game.
“Last year, half the country wanted a great, great young manager,” Moyes remarked.
He’s probably the only person who has led a team from [League One] to the Championship to the Premier League, though I could be wrong.
“I lost to Big Sam [Allardyce]’s Bolton in the play-off final, but I thought I was going to pull it off when I was manager of Preston, [League One] straight up, Championship.
“Kieran’s ability to lead the squad to victory is an incredible accomplishment.
“At the moment, everyone is talking about how great Wrexham is doing and the incredible work Phil Parkinson has done, but Kieran has taken it into the Premier League, which is fantastic.
And let’s not forget that Ipswich is a club. If you’re from a certain generation, you may recall Sir Bobby Robson’s Ipswich Town sides. They were outstanding and a serious contender for First Division titles.
He did it at a legitimate football team. Although he will be unhappy with this season, I believe he has performed admirably overall.
After the 11-time England striker returned to training this week after suffering a hamstring injury, Moyes, one of the numerous Premier League managers rumored to be interested in Town forward Liam Delap, may have Dominic Calvert-Lewin back in his lineup, albeit at best on the bench.
Armando Broja, another attacker who is a summer target for Town, is available after missing last week’s 1-0 loss to Chelsea, his parent club.
Orel Mangala (knee), Jesper Lindstrøm (hernia), and James Tarkowski (hamstring) are still out.
