Murder Arrest After Man from Building Fire Dies
A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a man who was rescued from a fire at a property in Wigan, Greater Manchester Police have confirmed.
The incident occurred on the evening of Wednesday, 17 August 2024, when emergency services were called to reports of a blaze at a residential building on Dumbarton Green. Firefighters arrived promptly at the scene and managed to rescue a man, believed to be in his 40s, from inside the burning structure. He was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries but tragically died later.
In an official statement, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that a 48-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and causing grievous bodily harm. Officers are treating the incident as a suspected arson attack.
A spokesperson for the police said: “This is a deeply distressing case. Despite the best efforts of emergency responders and medical staff, the victim has sadly passed away. We are investigating this as a murder and believe the fire may have been started deliberately.”
Fire and rescue teams worked tirelessly to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to neighbouring properties. Two crews in full protective gear were seen entering the smoke-filled home shortly after arriving. Images released by PA Media show the backs of two firemen in protective suits as they battled the fire, illustrating the intensity of the scene.
The area surrounding Dumbarton Green was cordoned off for several hours while investigations took place, and forensic teams remained on site the following day to examine the wreckage for further evidence.
Detectives from GMP’s Major Incident Team are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward. They are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area in the hours leading up to the fire.
Detective Chief Inspector Lucy Holmes, who is leading the investigation, said: “We understand this incident will cause concern within the local community, and we are doing everything possible to establish the full circumstances. We urge anyone who may have seen or heard anything unusual to get in touch. No matter how small it may seem, your information could be vital to this investigation.”
Neighbours described scenes of panic and confusion on the night of the fire, with some residents being temporarily evacuated from their homes as a safety precaution. One local resident said: “There was smoke everywhere, and you could hear people shouting. The fire brigade was here very quickly, but it was terrifying to think someone was trapped inside.”
The arrested man remains in police custody for questioning as inquiries continue. Officers have reassured the public that they believe this to be an isolated incident with no wider threat to the community.
GMP has asked anyone with CCTV, dashcam footage, or other relevant information from the area around Dumbarton Green on the evening of Wednesday 17 August to contact them via 101 or report anonymously through Crimestoppers.
The investigation is ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge in the coming days as police piece together the events that led to this tragic loss of life.
