New Deal for Oldham Athletic Goalkeeper Mat Hudson
Oldham Athletic have confirmed that goalkeeper Mat Hudson has signed a new three-year deal with the club, securing the services of one of their most influential players from last season’s promotion-winning campaign.
The 26-year-old shot-stopper played a pivotal role in Oldham’s successful return to the Football League, keeping an impressive 14 clean sheets in 38 National League appearances. With his previous contract set to expire this summer, fans had been eager for confirmation that Hudson would remain at Boundary Park. Now, the Latics faithful can breathe a sigh of relief as their number one commits his future to the club until the summer of 2028.
Hudson’s performances last season earned him widespread praise from supporters, teammates, and coaching staff alike. Calm under pressure and commanding in the box, he became a central figure in the club’s defensive setup. His ability to pull off crucial saves in tight games helped Oldham build momentum during the second half of the campaign — particularly in key fixtures against fellow promotion challengers.
“Mat has been outstanding for us,” said manager Micky Mellon. “He’s not only grown as a player, but he’s become a leader in the dressing room. We knew it was a priority to keep him here, and we’re delighted he’s chosen to stay and continue this journey with us in League Two.”
Having joined Oldham in 2022 following a spell with Bury AFC, Hudson initially arrived as a backup option. However, he quickly forced his way into the starting XI with a string of assured performances, and by the time the 2023/24 campaign kicked off, he was the undisputed first choice. His consistency and work ethic have since made him a fan favourite.
In a statement following the announcement, Hudson said: “I’m buzzing to sign this new deal. Oldham is a club that means a lot to me — the supporters have backed me from day one, and last season was really special. Getting promoted was an incredible feeling, and I can’t wait to test ourselves back in the EFL. There’s more to come from this group, and I’m excited to be part of it.”
As Oldham prepare for their return to League Two, retaining key figures like Hudson is seen as a crucial part of the club’s summer business. With a settled core and the momentum of promotion behind them, the Latics are aiming to build a squad capable of holding their own — and potentially pushing further up the pyramid.
Hudson’s renewal is expected to be the first of several contract decisions made over the coming weeks, with Mellon keen to ensure continuity while strengthening in key areas.
For now, though, Oldham fans will be glad to know that their number one is going nowhere. Hudson, who turns 27 later this year, now has the opportunity to cement his place as one of the club’s modern-day greats between the sticks.
