New frontrunner for the vacant managerial role at Plymouth Argyle after talks held with former international footballer

Plymouth Argyle endured a tough weekend which resulted in Miron Muslic leaving the club, but EFL Analysis can now exclusively reveal that a frontrunner in the search for a new manager has come to the fore.

The Pilgrims were relegated this season despite a valiant battle at the conclusion of the season, prompting significant appreciation for Muslic’s efforts since joining the club.

However, this drew additional attention to the Austrian coach, who made it obvious over the weekend that he wants to move on.

In the end, Plymouth chairman Simon Hallett had ‘no choice’ but to let Muslic move to Schalke. Not ideal preparation for life in League One, but the club may have already found a successor.

What we know about Stephen Robinson and Plymouth Argyle

Following Muslic’s departure, Ian Evatt has been connected with the Plymouth post, although supporters have also suggested that Jack Wilshere would be a good fit.

Now, owing to information from our Chief Football Correspondent, Graeme Bailey, EFL Analysis can confirm St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson is of interest to Plymouth Argyle, who have spoken with him about a potential move to Home Park.

Former frontrunner Jack Wilshere, former Watford manager Tom Cleverley, and former Oxford manager Des Buckingham are thought to be still in the running for the position.

However, we are told St Mirren are aiming to persuade Robinson to sign a contract extension to deter interest from south of the border, specifically Plymouth Argyle.

Stephen Robinson’s managerial stats

The Northern Irish manager joined St Mirren in February 2022, and he has led the team to a top-six finish in every season he has been in charge.

Robinson was hired because of his prior work at Morecambe and Motherwell, after struggling to adapt to managing in his first post at Oldham Athletic.

Team Matches Win Percentage
2006-07 Oldham Athletic 33 21.2%
2017-20 Motherwell 169 42%
2021-22 Morecambe 40 25%
2022-present St Mirren 148 35.6%

Throughout his playing career, the former Northern Ireland international has had extensive experience in both the Championship and League One.

Plymouth may hope he can utilize his experience as a player promoted between divisions with Luton Town, along with his skills as a manager, to propel the club back to the Championship after being relegated last season.
