New Sussex County Family Court now set to open in 2026.

Georgetown, Delaware – According to Sean O’Sullivan, chief of community relations for Delaware Courts, construction on the new Sussex County Family Court in Georgetown is now projected to be completed by autumn 2025, with an early spring 2026 opening date.

When the court broke ground in June 2022, it was anticipated to be completed by 2024. According to CoastTV News, development is planned to end in April 2025.

“A lot of little things happened over the course of time that pushed this out,” O’Sullivan told the reporter. “Due to COVID, there were some supply chain delays, as well as the rare weather delay that pushed things back. Before the envelope was completed and the building was sealed, it rained occasionally, and you had to pump water out of specific sections to keep the ball rolling.”

Harri Lopez works at Federated Auto Parts, located across the street from the courtroom. Lopez says having a road closed for construction increases travel time when delivering deliveries.

“It’s hard to because especially when it’s like, especially since we had to take the long road now, the customers expect it to be here already, and they don’t get it until later on,” Lopez told me.

O’Sullivan stated that once outdoor construction is completed, crews will move furniture, computers, papers and staff to ready the building for public use, which is expected in October.

“The majority of the outside work is completed. We are currently working on several interior projects, such as carpeting and flooring. The HVAC system is up and running. The parking garage construction is about finished, and there will be more outfitting, such as signs, in that facility, according to O’Sullivan.

O’Sullivan also stated that they are looking forward to the new building.

“We’re anxious to open this new, more secure, safe, beautiful building for folks,” according to O’Sullivan. “I think people are really going to be impressed by the architecture of it.”

The new structure will span 107,000 square feet. Inside, there will be eight huge courtrooms.
