Newcastle star could ‘leave’ for Aston Villa in ‘left-field’ swap deal including ‘unhappy’ Villans man
Harvey Barnes, a standout for Newcastle United, may “leave” Eddie Howe’s team this summer to join Premier League rivals Aston Villa, according to sources.
During the summer transfer window of 2023, Newcastle paid about £38 million to acquire Barnes from Leicester City.
Over the last two seasons, Barnes has mostly played a supporting role for the Magpies, but in the final stretch of this season, the 27-year-old has been instrumental for Howe’s team, scoring eight goals in six games to increase Newcastle’s chances of making it to the Champions League, where they are well-positioned to fend off competition and secure a place in Europe’s top club tournament.
Nevertheless, given Aston Villa’s interest, it has been reported that the winger may go this summer.
Craig Hope of The Daily Mail reports that Barnes could make a “shock” exit, with a “swap” deal to Aston Villa being suggested.
Hope clarified: “Here is a left-field (left wing) update, but Harvey Barnes is being pursued by a few Premier League clubs.” I’ve been informed that this includes Aston Villa.
After January, I thought Barnes would leave this summer, but perhaps his recent run with the team has changed things.
“Newcastle likes Jacob Ramsey, but could they afford to spend a decent chunk of their budget on a midfielder?
“I’m not so sure, unless the deal was manufactured in a way to suit all parties, one to watch, especially amid the Barnes interest.”
Earlier this week, a report from Football Insider claimed that Ramsey is “unhappy” at Aston Villa as he “nears an exit.”
Ramsey has four goals and seven assists in his 44 Aston Villa appearances, but he has only made 18 Premier League starts.
