Although some felt the dismissal was excessive, the Hornets had to undergo a significant summer of change, which eventually included Cleverley, after they had only managed one point from their previous five games.

The 13-time England captain, a former midfielder for Manchester United, Everton, and Watford, was named interim manager in March 2024 after current Blackburn Rovers manager Valerien Ismael left.

The 35-year-old, who was the first Hornets manager to stay in command for a full season since Javi Gracia in 2018–19, would take over the position full-time a month later, although he is currently unemployed before of the 2025–26 season.

“I have no idea regarding Watford sometimes,” conceded Sky Sports pundit David Prutton, who was unsure of the decision and thought time would tell if Watford had made the right one.

“The team that I saw come the end of the season was ill-disciplined and lacking leadership, both on and off the pitch.”

“It doesn’t help when you’ve got a manager who has constant whispers about their role at Watford, with people saying that they’re only a few games away from being moved on.”

The fact that they stayed with him for a season is damning them with faint praise, in my opinion, but it’s one good thing to take away from a season in which not much was accomplished, isn’t it?

“So, did they make the right decision, in my opinion? I have no idea at all. I have no idea. I’ve got no notion who goes in there, have no idea what the next port of call is for them.

“I assume that the ownership at Watford is quite ambitious. You need strong personalities and strong minds in the dugout going ahead, but if it’s not working, they’ll change regardless, of course.

“So, was that a good or bad call? I have no idea.
