Norfolk and Suffolk gas network to benefit from £91m upgrade
As part of a three-decade programme to upgrade the UK gas network that started in 2002, Cadent, the largest gas distribution network in the UK, is investing £91 million over the next 12 months to replace aging metallic pipes, many of which are over 100 years old, with new plastic ones in order to futureproof supply for 1.6 million properties locally.
Almost 50 miles of pipeline will be installed throughout Norfolk and approximately 45 miles in Suffolk. Kerry Stimson, Cadent’s head of investment, stated:
“We are very aware that the majority of homes across the east of England rely on gas for central heating, and it’s our job to make sure they get it, safely and reliably, throughout the year.
“”We are responsible for replacing metallic gas pipes when their safe working life is coming to an end.
These renovations also have significant environmental benefits for the area since they lower methane emissions and make it possible to switch to more sustainable gases, such as biomethane.
“This is crucial for a cleaner future; in order to meet demand and be sustainable, the UK will need energy from a variety of sources.”
Cadent oversees the safe operation and maintenance of approximately 14,300 miles of pipes in the east of England each year, the majority of which are located beneath local roads.
