Jack Wilshere has left Norwich City by mutual consent.
The first team coach, who spent two games in interim command at the close of the Championship season, left Carrow Road, the Canaries stated on Saturday afternoon.
After been passed over by sporting director Ben Knapper in the ongoing hunt for a replacement for Johannes Hoff Thorup, Wilshere is eager to investigate head coaching prospects this summer.
The 33-year-old joined the Dane’s backroom staff in October 2024 after previously working at Arsenal’s youth.
Wilshere managed a 4-2 victory over Cardiff City at home on the last day and a goalless draw at Middlesbrough.
“During his stay with us, Jack had a significant influence here. According to the official website, Knapper stated, “We’re all sad to see him move on because he built great connections with our players and staff.”
We all appreciate his filling in as our temporary head coach for the season’s last two games, but we also respect and understand his wish to look into other options.
“He departs with our warmest regards, and we’ll keep a careful eye on his development. He will undoubtedly have a very prosperous career as a senior game coach.
Although a number of City players openly supported the former England midfielder’s qualifications, Knapper decided not to consider him for the head coach position due to Wilshere’s lack of senior coaching experience.
Naturally, he felt let down. He has a lot of ambition, which is understandable. “But for the context and where we are right now, we’re focusing externally,” Knapper stated during a recent post-season media round at Colney. “I’m really familiar with him. Naturally, the romantic or emotional side of me would want to make that choice, but it’s my responsibility to keep my emotions in check and make cold, unbiased choices regarding risk management.
It was challenging because you have those sentimental, romantic ideas, and I’m also a person. In actuality, though, it is my responsibility to put things aside and decide what I believe is best for the football team. And I did just that.
“Jack has extraordinary talent. I have no doubt that he will be a very successful head coach. He is ambitious and eager. Since we’ve been here, everything we’ve observed of him points to his arrival at that location.
“However, I didn’t feel that this was that specific moment in time given where he is in his journey.”
