Norwich City interested in 47-year-old amid Thorup replacement search
Earlier this week, Norwich City made the audacious decision to fire manager Johannes Hoff Thorup. Due to a bad run of form, the Dane was removed of his NCFC duties.
A decline in the Championship table has led the board to decide that changes are required, despite many predictions that this season would be a transitional one for the Canaries. Jack Wilshere will be the interim head coach while they look for a permanent replacement.
Many bosses will undoubtedly be connected to the open position at Norwich City, and Raphael Wicky is one of the names that has surfaced in early rumors.
Speaking to EFL Analysis, writer Graeme Bailey has indicated that Wicky is ‘emerging as someone of interest’ as the Canaries analyze their alternatives. Numerous candidates have indicated their interest to NCFC, with caretaker boss Wilshere among them.
Wicky’s next job is likely to be on these shores after having been connected to several English jobs in the past, it is added.
The 47-year-old hasn’t had a job since leaving BSC Young Boys in Switzerland in March 2024.
During his playing career, Wicky traveled extensively, playing in Germany, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States.
In his first management position, he oversaw the FC Basel youth squad, progressing through the age categories until spending a season as their first-team manager from 2017 to 2018. The rumored Nottingham City contender had greater success with BSC Young Boys after a brief term as USA U17s manager was followed by a difficult stint of just under two years with Chicago Fire.
Before leaving a little more than a year ago, Wicky took them to the league and cup double in the 2022–2023 season, starting a foray into European football.
Thorup’s departure from Norwich City surprised many, but they now have the time to be thorough and patient in their hiring process.
Although the next manager will probably want to be in comfortably before the summer transfer window opens, NCFC will have plenty of time to evaluate their alternatives before then. This will give them time to evaluate the existing team and identify areas that need attention in preparation for the upcoming season.
The Canaries have made a risky gamble by replacing head coach early into their rebuild, soo they must prove the decision right by landing the right man and progressing in the 2025/26 campaign.
