Norwich City: Thorup on Nunez Portsmouth Championship call
The playmaker’s season has been marred by fitness-related issues, but his own form seems to have mirrored Norwich’s miserable end-of-season decline. In the most recent away loss to bottom club Plymouth, Nunez did not return for the second half after his reckless challenge on Isaac Hayden gave up a penalty slotted by Colby Bishop in first half stoppage time.
Following a humiliation at home against Pompey, Thorup questioned the “desire and motivation” of his team and understood why Nunez shifted during the break.
Performance was the deciding factor. He stated, “I believe we needed more stability and to be more solid out of position than we were.” “I think we opened up too much in situations where we have to probably defend more compact as a team and as a unit. So that was down to a tactical decision, and we had to change.”
Thorup referenced the ‘tricky’ contractual status of many of his players in his post-match media at Carrow Road.
Nunez and Championship top scorer Borja Sainz have 12 months left on their current contracts this summer, and both are expected to draw transfer interest.
“To be honest, every player deals with a situation like that differently, and some do it one way. Some do it another way,” Thorup said. “And I’ll just say, like I said a couple of times, we have to find out who has that extra personal, individual motivation to go to Millwall and try to take three points, even though it won’t really affect our outcome this season.”
City is expected to make an announcement in the coming days regarding the futures of their soon-to-be out-of-contract cohort.
“And I can also understand, which is fair enough, if a player says my time here is running out, I’m not extending my contract, or I want to seek something else, or whatever.
And Alright, fair play, then we have to find some other players.” “It can affect the league position, but it really doesn’t change much whether we are 12th or 13th, but you have to put that aside and find some other motivation to be able to play that game.”
Thorup was blunt about his team’s lackluster performance against Portsmouth, who had lost 12 of their previous 13 away league games coming to Carrow Road.
“They were on top in all the situations where they have to win first contacts, duels, where they had to anticipate where the ball will drop and they could win second balls and third balls,” he said. “And that’s probably down to sometimes desire and that’s definitely something we have to look at.”
You have to bring that every single time you play. If you just drop 10 or 15 points off that, there’s going to be no chance. I don’t know if it comes down to that.
I also talked to some of the captaincy group (at full-time) about this, and I believe some of them felt that some didn’t deliver, or bring to the game what is needed in a Championship match, because there are no easy games.
I have to find out. And I have to look at the situations again.”I have to examine why we struggle so much with each and every cross they put into the box. Why can’t we handle that? And that’s also why I said, ‘I don’t know, but, but we simply have to find out and bring the players to do better on the pitch for Monday.'” I don’t know, but this could also be due to poor positioning, poor preparation, or poor anticipation.
