Norwich Wants to Hire Klug, a Longtime Town Academy Coach
According to TWTD, Norwich City is pursuing Bryan Klug, a longtime Blues academy coach, former assistant manager, and three-time caretaker-manager.
The move, which we understand isn’t related to Liam Manning, who played and coached under Klug in the Town academy, being set to take over as manager at Carrow Road, is reportedly being driven by Dean Rastrick, the Canaries’ head of football development. Rastrick worked with Klug during his time at Tottenham’s academy.
Klug, 64, gained England junior caps while playing for Town as a young player under Bobby Robson. However, he moved on before making his senior debut because of injuries that hindered his development. He returned to Town as a junior coach in 1987 after stints with Wimbledon (loan), Chesterfield, Peterborough, and non-league teams. In 1998, he was appointed academy director upon the academy’s founding.
Richard Wright, Titus Bramble, Kieron Dyer, James Scowcroft, and Richard Naylor were among the players Klug helped the Blues acquire during this time. These players were important members of George Burley’s team, which went on to win promotion in 1999–00 and finish fifth in the Premier League the following season. Darren Bent, Darren Ambrose, Ian Westlake, Dean Bowditch, and Matt Richards followed them into the first team.
Like the Town young teams of the 1970s, the U18s won the FA young Cup in 2005.
When he became manager in 2006, Jim Magilton appointed him assistant. In January 2009, he was appointed head of football development.
He returned to the Blues and his old role as academy director in June 2012 after being fired by Roy Keane in January 2010 and joining Tottenham as assistant academy manager.
In 2016, he moved to a new job as head of coaching and player development, one which meant he was involved more on the training field, as Lee O’Neill took over the more administrative academy director’s role.
Since Jim Magilton, Mick McCarthy, and Paul Hurst left Town, Klug has taken over as manager in interim.
Klug, who was born in Coventry, has held that role, but his probable departure is not surprising given that the majority of the Town academy personnel from before the acquisition have gone on.
