‘Not Considered A Serious Target’ – Sheff Utd And West Brom Boosted As Swansea Not Keen On Defender
Championship promotion hopefuls Sheffield United and West Bromwich Albion have been handed a potential transfer boost after Swansea City reportedly cooled their interest in Swiss-based defender Gora Diouf.
The 21-year-old centre-back, who has caught the eye with a string of solid performances for Swiss Super League side FC Sion, is set to become a free agent this summer. Diouf made 24 appearances for Sion during the 2024/25 campaign, impressing scouts with his composure, physical presence, and ball-playing ability.
However, despite recent speculation linking Swansea with a move for the young Senegalese defender, journalist Tom Coleman reports that the Welsh club do not consider Diouf a serious target at this stage of the window.
That revelation may come as a relief to both Sheffield United and West Brom, who have been actively monitoring Diouf’s situation. The Blades, under Chris Wilder, are looking to rebuild their defensive options after a frustrating campaign, and Diouf’s availability on a free transfer is thought to make him a particularly attractive proposition.
West Brom, meanwhile, are also believed to be in the market for reinforcements at the back, with manager Carlos Corberán keen to add youth and athleticism to his squad. Diouf’s profile—young, affordable, and with room to develop—fits the bill perfectly for both Championship outfits looking to bolster their ranks for a promotion push in the 2025/26 season.
Swansea’s decision to shift focus elsewhere may stem from a change in recruitment priorities, or doubts about whether Diouf would be a natural fit for their defensive system under head coach Luke Williams. The Swans are understood to be targeting players with proven experience in English football, which could explain why Diouf is no longer high on their shortlist.
Although nothing is yet finalised, Diouf’s camp is believed to be open to offers from England, and discussions with interested clubs are expected to intensify as the summer window progresses.
For now, Sheffield United and West Brom appear to have a clearer path should they wish to press forward with their interest in the former Swiss youth international, who could represent a smart piece of business without the burden of a transfer fee.
With several Championship clubs eyeing value signings this summer, Diouf’s name may continue to circulate. But with Swansea now out of the running, the chase for the defender’s signature could become a two-horse race between the Blades and the Baggies.
